“Chilli King” Clint Meyer, Fiery Pioneer and Founder of Fire Dragon Chillies, Dies After Cancer Battle.

Clint Meyer, the visionary founder of Fire Dragon Chillies and a prominent figure in New Zealand’s chilli and hot sauce community, has died at the age of 50 following a battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully at his home on Friday evening, surrounded by family and loved ones, leaving behind a legacy that touched the hearts — and taste buds — of spice enthusiasts around the world.

Affectionately known as the “Chilli King,” Meyer was far more than a hot sauce producer; he was a pioneer in the industry. From his Northland base, he built the award-winning Fire Dragon Chillies brand, earning international recognition for its bold flavours and intense heat. His products secured multiple gold medals at the prestigious World Hot Sauce Awards.

Diagnosed in late 2025 with aggressive stage four cancer that had spread throughout his body, Meyer faced his illness with courage and determination. In a heartfelt social media message shared just weeks before his death, he spoke openly about his diagnosis and expressed deep gratitude for the support of family and friends, describing their love as a source of strength during the most challenging period of his life.

Beyond his craft, Meyer was a much-loved figure within the chilli community. He founded the New Zealand Chilli Eating Champs, an event that brought fans together in celebration, camaraderie and the shared thrill of spice. Plans had already been underway for the 10th edition of the competition this May.

Tributes have poured in from across the globe. Friends, fellow chilli enthusiasts and organisations such as the League of Fire — an international chilli-eating governing body — praised his passion, generosity and the lasting impact he made. The League honoured him as its first Hall of Fame inductee in December, recognising his unwavering commitment to the spirit and culture of competitive chilli-eating.

Social media has been filled with heartfelt tributes from those who knew him personally. One fellow enthusiast described him as an “absolute legend of a bloke,” celebrating not only his achievements in the spice world but also his warmth and friendship.

Meyer is survived by his partner and four children. His family has announced that a local funeral will be held this week, with a larger memorial service planned in Auckland later in the year.

Though he is gone, Clint Meyer’s legacy endures — in every bottle he created, every competition he inspired, and every memory shared by the community he helped ignite.
